Inspirational pilot #24
IPL24 – BIODAPH: NBS for improving WWTP effluents (in Quart (Girona), Spain)
Nature-based tertiary treatment for WWTP effluents (<10,000 p.e.).
SYSTEM CONCEPT
- It improves secondary effluent quality through a reactor that uses Daphnia filtration and biofilm activity to remove solids, pathogens and selected emerging contaminants, enabling water reuse. No aeration or recirculation is required.

KEY BENEFITS
Very low energy demand (0.02 kWh/m³), minimal sludge generation and low maintenance. Compact footprint (0.5 m²/m³/d), around 90% OPEX savings vs. sand filtration, and effluent suitable for agricultural reuse (Quality C, or Quality A with final disinfection).
STRATEGIC INTEGRATION
Easy add-on solution for small WWTPs, especially where low OPEX and simple operation are priorities. Can be combined with UV or chlorination when higher reuse standards are needed.
SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT
A visible and easy-to-communicate nature-based solution that helps promote public acceptance of water reuse, sustainable treatment and low-carbon innovation.
REGULATORY FRAMEWORK
Supports compliance with EU water reuse requirements and responds to the increasing focus on improved effluent quality and emerging contaminants in the revised urban wastewater framework.
