Pathfinding study #3
Thessaly Region, Greece
Central Greece
BACKGROUND
The Thessaly region is Greece’s primary agricultural hub, where 90% of water is used for irrigation. The region suffered catastrophic damage from Storm Daniel, which destroyed infrastructure and killed over 200,000 livestock.

KEY FACTS
- Annual water deficit of 500 hm³.
- Over-extraction has led to seawater intrusion; fragmented governance across 50+ local organizations.
EXPECTED IMPACTS
- “Building back better” using resilient, decentralised NbS that are easier to recover after floods.
- Integration of flood mitigation with wastewater treatment.
- Establishment of a water reuse framework for farmers and SMEs.
