Thanks to more than 50 years of water science, KWR has a solid knowledge base. From this knowledge base, we contribute to sustainable solutions for society’s major challenges, based on our motto of bridging science to practice. Together with stakeholders from the water world, administration, industry, agriculture, nature management, research organisations, and society, we focus on eight key working areas:
- Nature-inclusive water and biodiversity
- Public design for water
- Water cycle
- Energy transitions
- Water Quality and Health
- Freshwater resources management
- Resource Recovery and Circular Systems
- Digital water
KWB

The Berlin Centre of Competence for Water (KWB) integrates science, research, and consultancy to promote sustainable water management. We focus on applied research across the entire water cycle. We support municipalities, policymakers and infrastructure operators by linking innovative research with practical application, driving forward creative water solutions for a sustainable future, as we do in SOLUCIR.
KWB and BWB are responsible for the path finding study #1 Berlin, where different water management strategies will be considered. The economic and environmental impacts of centralised and decentralised solutions will be evaluated for local water reuse as well as solutions to augment natural flows in order to enable a resilient water management addressing equally population growth, industrial development and ecosystem quality.
Comprehensive risk assessment tools will be developed that encompass health, operational and environmental risks. KWB is leading the corresponding work package and the activities in the region of Berlin Brandenburg.

Imperial College London (ICL) is one of the world’s leading universities, recognised for excellence in science, engineering, medicine, and business. Through its Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, ICL has extensive experience in urban water systems, circular economy, sustainability, systems analysis, stakeholder engagement, and decision-support tools. Within SOLUCIR, ICL contributes expertise in collaborative innovation processes, governance, and the integration of decentralised water solutions to support the project’s technical, societal, and market objectives.
Università Politecnica Delle Marche

The Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM) has its headquarters in Ancona (Italy) and seven campuses in the region for over 400 000 m2. UNIVPM has five main thematic areas in Agricultural Sciences, Economics, Engineering & Architecture, Medicine & Surgery Sciences. UNIVPM counts more than 350 PhD and about 17000 students. There are over 600 Academic staff, while 250 are research assistants and more than 570 are technical and admin staff. UNIVPM is the second in Italy for 5-years employment rate and the 3rd for technological transfer. Within UNIVPM, WWEELab (Wastewater Engineering, Water & Environmental Engineering Laboratory), led by Francesco Fatone, conducts internationally recognized research on water reuse, wastewater treatment, nutrient recovery, circular economy and environmental biotechnology. The group contributes to European projects through research, innovation, demonstration activities and stakeholder engagement aimed at advancing sustainable and resource-efficient water systems.
OiEau

The International Office for Water is a non-profit association established under French law, recognised as a public utility and created in 1991.
Its activities cover the small and large water cycles, as well as aquatic environments, biodiversity, the circular economy and climate change.
OiEau’s long-standing mission is to develop capacities for better management of water, a vital resource, at all scales – local, national and transboundary – in France and worldwide.
MELISSA Foundation

MELiSSA Foundation (Belgium) is an independent non-profit organisation rooted in the MELiSSA programme of the European Space Agency, which has developed closed-loop life support technologies for long-duration space missions since the late 1980s. The Foundation translates this space heritage into real-world applications, operating a network of Inspirational Pilot Locations where circular water, nutrient recovery, and waste valorisation technologies are demonstrated under operational conditions. In SOLUCIR, the MELiSSA Foundation contributes four Inspirational Pilots across France, Italy, Spain, and Belgium, bringing space-derived systems thinking to the challenge of decentralised circular water management.
Water Europe

Water Europe (WE) is a multi-stakeholder association with around 300 members representing the entire water value chain. Established by the European Commission as a European Technology Platform, WE brings together all actors across the water value chain. Guided by its Water Vision for a Water-Smart Society, Water Europe is a purpose-driven organisation anchored in the values of collaboration, societal responsibility, evidence-based and technology-neutral action, and a pragmatic yet ambitious drive to deliver value-driven solutions.
Berliner Wasserbetriebe

Berliner Wasserbetriebe (BWB) is Germany’s largest public water utility, providing drinking water supply and wastewater services for approximately 3.9 million people in the Berlin metropolitan area. BWB combines the operation of large-scale water infrastructure with applied research. Its in-house R&D department works across the urban water cycle, covering water and wastewater treatment, resource recovery, digitalisation, hydraulic engineering and the integration of new technologies into utility practice. BWB regularly participates in national and European research projects on sustainable water management.
Within SOLUCIR, BWB is the owner of Pathfinding Study #1 (Berlin Metropolitan Area), investigating how circular and decentralised water management solutions can complement existing centralised infrastructure. BWB works with regional stakeholders to assess implementation pathways and contributes to the development of decision-support tools and life cycle assessment methodologies. Through its operational experience, BWB helps ensure that the project’s solutions are feasible, scalable and relevant for water utilities.
